The tournament

Charity golf tournaments are a familiar fixture in commercial construction and real estate, and it is easy to be cynical about them. This one is worth taking seriously because of what sits behind it. The event funds a school, and the school does work that is genuinely hard.

We sponsored a hole and ran a booth, and want to thank everyone who stopped by, and the team at Archway Academy for putting together such a meaningful event.

What Archway Academy does

Archway Academy is a recovery high school in Houston. It exists for students who are in recovery from substance use and who need an environment where staying sober and staying in school are not competing goals. That means the day is built around both: academics alongside clinical support, with the structure and the peer group that recovery actually requires.

The money raised at events like this funds scholarships, clinical services and the daily programs that keep the school running. It is the unglamorous operational funding that most fundraising skips over and that any school like this depends on.

Why we sponsor

Soil Depot is a Texas business and Houston is one of the four metros we work in every day. We think building strong communities goes beyond moving dirt, and the most useful thing a construction business can usually do is put money and time behind the organizations already doing the work well, rather than inventing something of its own.

Why a recovery high school is a different kind of school

Most students who complete substance use treatment go back to the same school, the same hallways and the same friendship group they were using in. It is a well understood problem: the treatment works and then the environment undoes it. Recovery high schools exist to break that loop by making the school itself part of the recovery, so a student is not choosing between staying sober and finishing their education.

They are rare. Running one means carrying clinical staff and a therapeutic program alongside a full academic timetable, for a small student body, which is a hard thing to fund from ordinary school funding alone. That is the gap events like this tournament fill, and it is why the money goes to unglamorous operational things rather than to a building with a name on it.

How we pick what to support

We are a dirt logistics company, not a foundation, and we try to be honest about what that means. We are not the right people to design a social program. We are decent at showing up, writing a check, and putting a booth and a few staff behind an organization that already knows what it is doing.

So the test we use is simple: is the organization local to a market where our people actually live and work, and is it doing something specific and hard rather than something broad and comfortable. Archway clears both. So does the Houston Food Bank work our regional team does through CCIM.
