Drawing the area beats typing it
Most volume mistakes start at the area, not at the arithmetic. A pad that is described as a clean rectangle in a meeting is rarely a clean rectangle on the ground, and the difference between the shape you assumed and the shape that exists is real yards. The four mistakes it prevents
The first is ordering the placed volume instead of the loose volume, which leaves the job short by whatever the compaction allowance would have been. The second is treating an irregular footprint as a tidy rectangle, which is usually an overestimate on paper and a surprise on the ground. The third is converting cubic yards to tons with a generic density rather than the material’s own, which matters enormously for rock and very little for loose topsoil.
The fourth is the one that costs schedule rather than money: sizing the material but never converting it to truckloads, so nobody finds out until delivery week that the job needs sixty loads through a single site entrance.
